Three Ways To Use Clicker Training To Help House Train Your Puppy

Submitted by: Jan Bear

No matter how much we love our puppy, we wonder when it will ever be house trained. If you have a six-week-old puppy in the house, you’ve got a creature who has no idea about picking a place to “go.” Dogs really want to be house trained, because they want to have a clean living space. Here are three ways to use clicker training to make the house training process smoother and easier.

First, as much as possible, let your dog go to his potty place right after eating and sleeping. After meals and upon awakening are the times that a puppy is most likely to need to go outside. Stay with your puppy and reward him when he goes where you want him to. If you’re using clicker training, click when he squats and reward when he’s done

If your puppy just goes out and sniffs around, give him some more time. Keep an eye out for telltale signs — walking in circles, sniffing where he’s gone before — that he’s ready. You’ll know the signs as you get to know your dog better. Click when the dog does what you want him to, and reward him with praise and a treat.

Second, designate a potty place for the dog. If your dog will use the back yard, you might want to teach it to use one confined area. You’ll want to clean it frequently, because they don’t like to walk through their waste, but that will help you limit the area you need to keep clean.

For indoor puppy training, tape an oven liner or pet training pad to an easily cleaned section of floor. As the dog gets older and better able to control his bladder and bowel movements, he can wait longer times before eliminating. You can stop clicking when your dog has mastered a behavior and go back to the training when it’s time for your dog to learn something new.

Finally, don’t punish the dog for getting it wrong. Instead, help your dog learn to succeed. Once upon a time, the common wisdom advised dog owners to rub the dog’s nose in his excrement. This is cruel and pointless. By the time the puppy is finished with his bowel movement, he has no idea what he’s done wrong.

If you just help them get it right, they will succeed much sooner. Dogs like to get into a groove, and if you can get them to succeed — and reward their success — they’ll be more than happy to get it right in the future.

With clicker training, the dog knows exactly what he’s being rewarded for — and so exactly what you want him to do.

Your dog is on your side in this process. He shares with his brothers, the wolves, an instinctive desire to keep waste out of his living area. The dog also wants to please you. You can use clicker training to help make your dog a welcome companion around your house.
